A&E triages patients by clinical need, giving critical and emergency patients priority. Do not use waiting times alone to decide whether to seek care.

Data explained
Understanding the waiting-time figures
HA publishes waits by triage category and two statistical positions. Read the category first, then the times for about half and most patients to understand the spread of waiting times.
About half of patients
The source’s p50 indicates the time within which about half of patients waiting can be seen. It is close to what is commonly called the median.
Most patients
The source’s p95 indicates the time within which most patients waiting can be seen. Some patients may still wait longer.
Category 3: Urgent
These patients need relatively prompt attention. This tool shows category 3 separately rather than combining it with lower-priority categories.
Categories 4 and 5
Category 4 is semi-urgent and category 5 is non-urgent. HA publishes their waiting-time distribution together, rounding the time up in half-hour units.
Triage follows clinical need, rather than arrival order
HA explains that triage nurses assign patients to Critical, Emergency, Urgent, Semi-urgent or Non-urgent according to clinical need. Treatment order depends on condition rather than registration time. This page shows category 3 and categories 4 and 5; category 1 and 2 patients receive priority.
- Category 1: CriticalHA target: immediate treatment, without waiting.
- Category 2: EmergencyHA target: treat 95% of patients within 15 minutes.
- Category 3: UrgentHA target: treat 90% of patients within 30 minutes; this page lists the waiting times for this category.
- Category 4: Semi-urgent; Category 5: Non-urgentWaits may be longer. HA advises patients whose condition is not urgent to seek care at public or private clinics.
A&E triage nurses determine the category through assessment on site; patients cannot choose it. In an emergency, call 999 immediately.

Sources and notes
Waiting times are published by the Hospital Authority. Agoodeal organises, filters and sorts the data. It does not decide which hospital suits your condition and does not provide medical advice.

Coverage and limitations
Triage categories and service targets come from HA’s A&E services guide; this page does not classify individual patients. Times are statistical estimates and actual waits change with patient numbers, triage priorities and conditions on site. They do not show which hospital is most appropriate for your condition. In an emergency, call 999 immediately.
