Data explained

Past waiting times, rather than your appointment date

The public data shows new case waiting times by specialty and hospital cluster for patients given appointments during the stated period. Your own waiting time depends on clinical triage, referral information and service capacity.

The median means half of new cases waited no longer than the figure shown. HA’s source-file note defines the longest wait as the 90th percentile: 90% of new cases were seen before the time shown, while about one in ten waited longer.

HA also explains that its published waiting times are not an individual patient’s actual waiting time. Your appointment is the date notified by the hospital or clinic. Compare the specialty, cluster, case category and data period together; one figure cannot describe every patient in Hong Kong.

New case triage

Urgent, semi-urgent and stable cases

Urgent (Priority 1)

Healthcare staff triage cases using the referral information and clinical need. HA aims to maintain a median waiting time of under two weeks for urgent new cases.

Semi-urgent (Priority 2)

HA aims to maintain a median waiting time of under eight weeks for semi-urgent new cases.

Stable (Routine)

Most public comparisons focus on stable new cases, where waits can vary widely. This page also shows their 90th-percentile waiting time.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose a cluster with a shorter wait?

Referrals and appointments depend on residence, service arrangements and clinical need. Public waiting-time figures alone do not let you transfer yourself to another cluster.

What if my condition worsens while I wait?

HA advises patients to contact the relevant specialist outpatient clinic to request an earlier appointment. In an emergency, attend an A&E department immediately.

How often is the data updated?

HA labels this dataset as quarterly, normally in January, April, July and October. Its data also gives a next update date, shown in the status panel. If that date has passed and this page still shows the old period, check HA’s website.

Why should I avoid comparing different specialties directly?

Demand, clinical priorities, consultation procedures and staffing differ. Compare figures within the same specialty.

Coverage and limitations

HA notes that Hong Kong East and Hong Kong West Clusters merged into Hong Kong Island Cluster on 1 April 2026. Until HA updates the relevant data, waiting times remain listed under the former cluster boundaries. Cases awaiting triage are excluded.
