Data explained
This page places EPD’s daily forecast beside its latest water quality grade. Both are useful, but answer different questions: one is about today and the other gives recent monitoring context.
EPD uses statistical and data-driven models, with microbial data, rainfall, wind, tides, salinity and water temperature, to forecast E. coli levels for the day. The 1-to-4 indices are official, not Agoodeal scores.
The grade is calculated from monitoring samples; it is not a real-time water quality reading. Read it beside today’s forecast to understand recent conditions.
EPD states that 4 means Very Poor. Rain may cause short-term water quality fluctuations, and people should consider avoiding swimming.
The water quality forecast does not cover sea conditions, flags or lifeguard services. Check the flags on arrival: LCSD advises against swimming under a red flag, while red-and-yellow flags indicate lifeguards on duty. Affected beaches fly red flags when a thunderstorm warning is in force. After heavy rain or bad weather, check beach opening arrangements and on-site notices in particular.
