Residential respite service

A short break for carers, with care for older people

Residential respite provides short-term residential care for older people in need, for example while a carer rests, is in hospital, deals with family matters or temporarily cannot provide care at home.

The SWD states that the service is for people aged 60 or above who are physically and mentally suitable for communal living. It is not a shortcut to long-term residential care. Confirm the stay, assessment and documents with the referring social worker or home.

Before applying

Prepare four kinds of information before calling

01

The older person’s needs

Mobility, cognition, nursing and medication needs.

02

Dates required

Expected arrival and departure dates, and any flexibility.

03

Care documents

Identity, medical, medication and relevant assessment records.

04

Fees and transport

Ask about charges, deposits, transport and family arrangements.

Data explained

A listed home does not mean a place is vacant

The SWD open data lists homes with designated residential respite places, but not vacant bed numbers. Treat the results as a contact list. Families and referring workers can use the SWD Vacancy Enquiry System to search by sex, dates and district; confirm the place, care level and admission date with the home.

For an urgent care crisis, ask a medical social worker, Integrated Family Service Centre or District Elderly Community Centre about other support.

How to use

After finding a home, arrange a social worker’s referral

  1. Contact a social workerThe SWD requires referral by a social worker. Call 182 183 or contact an Integrated Family Service Centre / Integrated Services Centre, a hospital Medical Social Services Unit, District Elderly Community Centre, Neighbourhood Elderly Centre or home care service team.
  2. Check vacant placesThe SWD Vacancy Enquiry System for Residential Respite Service / Emergency Placement lists designated respite vacancies by date and district. Vacancies change; the referring worker and home must confirm them.
  3. Arrange dates earlyThe March 2026 service guidelines allow applications for designated places up to six months before admission. Each older person may use up to 42 days in a 12-month period, with no stay longer than six weeks.

FAQ

Residential respite questions

Can I apply directly to a home?

You may first ask the home about its facilities, but the SWD requires a social worker’s referral for the formal application.

Is respite free?

No. The SWD page lists HK$62 per day for care-and-attention and contract home places, and HK$72 for nursing home places. The service guidelines say no deposit is required.

How long can the stay be?

The service guidelines specify at least 24 hours and no more than six weeks per stay, with up to 42 days in any 12 months. Actual dates depend on places and the individual arrangements.

Is emergency placement the same service?

Emergency placement has separate arrangements and eligibility. Do not rely only on the general residential respite list.

Method and calculations

Agoodeal reads the SWD Vacancy Enquiry System’s residential respite home file and extracts names, districts, addresses and telephone numbers for keyword, district and home-type filters. It does not rank homes or estimate vacancies. Official English fields come from the same SWD service-unit record. Address grouping is an Agoodeal reading aid based on address text.
